Sushil Kumar Paudel Hi! Dear Vets, Sorry for long Gap! today i want to open floor to discuss about the management Of diabetic(DM) animal(esp. Dog and Cat), can we discuss about the best way to get ideal glucose curve in short period of time? ( I am extremely sorry, if already discussed)

    • Sumit Virmani Dr. swarup, i think, we just got an idea for a new event :Diabetes Management.

    • Rajshankar Tony Sarma The problem is that it necessarily takes a lot of time to curve an animal (ideally 24hours, minimum 12) and more time to get its curve to respond to insulin appropriately- each alteration in dose will take several days to stabilise before you can assess it by curve.

    • Joseph Cyrus do u need a glucose curve to manage diabetes and is it practical in the practice scenario?

It's gold standard, and cannot be got rid of altogether. Tests like fructosamine can give you an idea of how good glycaemic control has been over the past few weeks - but there can be a large cross-over between normal and mildly/moderately ...See more

    • Swarupmay Majumdar Grt on, from Raj. But I wonder I have no nowledge abt glucose nadir, and how do I do it serially? can anyone help
      15 July at 10:11 ·
    • Rajshankar Tony Sarma
Technical term for simple concept! After an injection of insulin, plasma glucose levels *should* go down. The nadir is the lowest glucose concentration that the insulin injection causes. The time from injection to that point depends on type...See more

    • Sushil Kumar Paudel Thanks to all! furthermore i want to know the ideal range of Glucose during 12hr(between 2 insulin injections), coz its very likely to face to the problem of Hypoglycemia and reverse hyperglycemia, when we increase the dose of insulin dose. Is there any way to know, that how much we can increase, or its trial or error method? And also, what about the effectiveness of HUMULINE in dogs?. Thanks!

Right. Protocol for SIMPLE (no ketoacidosis, no ketones in urine) diabetics is as follows.

Choose an Insulin. Currently, lente insulins are preferred for dogs and cats, even though twice daily dosing is routinely needed in cats (in humans, t...See more

    • Rajshankar Tony Sarma No personal experience of Humulin, sorry. I'd guess that it'd be a case of curving to work out what it does to the patient, as with any other insulin.

    • Joseph Cyrus The glucose curve is the gold standard I agree but I find it very hard to convince owners. BTW fructosamine do you use a human lab to assay it or do you have one that does veterinary?
      15 July at 20:10 ·
    • Rajshankar Tony Sarma
      We have veterinary labs.

I think the key to persuading owners of the curve is to talk to them. When they understand how complicated the disease is, and all the things we need to look for, they are much more amenable. Costs are an issue to t...See more
